Asking questions

If something isn't clear, ask. This page shows the two assistants you can ask, what each one can help with, and when they aren't there.

You don't have to finish the module first, and you can ask in any language. The answer comes in the language you write in.

The tutor inside a moduleCopy Anchor Link

To open it:

• On a computer, select the tutor button at the bottom of the rail on the left, or press A. The question box says Ask anything.
• On a phone, open Navigation at the bottom of the screen and choose the Chat tab.

It also opens by itself on a module's last scene, and after you get a check question wrong on your last attempt.

What it can do:

• Answer about the module and its course. It answers from the course's own material, not from general knowledge. If the material doesn't cover your question, it says so.
• Search the web when the course doesn't cover it. If you ask about something the course doesn't cover, it can search the public web. It shows the sources it used and tells you the answer comes from outside the course.
• Point you to your other courses. When something you ask is covered in another course assigned to you, it shows that course as a card you can open. It never shows courses that aren't assigned to you.
• Know where you are. It knows the scene you're on, the line being narrated, and how far you've got through the module.
• Answer how Vidext works. Ask about playback, subtitles, checks or your progress, and it answers from these help pages.

It only helps with your course and its topics. It declines unrelated requests.

Asking about one passageCopy Anchor Link

Select a word or a passage in the Deep learning text (the Transcript tab on a phone). The tutor takes it as the thing you're asking about, and offers one-tap actions:

• Explain this
• Go deeper
• Give me an example

On a check, the only action is Help me reason about this.

You can also type your own question with the selection attached. Clear selected text goes back to asking about the module as a whole. You can select text from the scene you're on.

The assistant on your learning homeCopy Anchor Link

On your learning home, the box that says Ask about your courses… is a different assistant, the Learning assistant. It covers everything assigned to you, not one module:

• what to do next, with the course or module as a card you can open,
• which course covers a topic, and what a module says about it,
• how Vidext works, from these help pages,
• searching the public web, when you ask it to.

Your conversations are kept. Use the history button in the bottom-left corner to reopen or search them.

When the assistants aren't thereCopy Anchor Link

• Translated courses. While you take a course in a language other than the one it was written in, neither assistant is available: the tutor doesn't appear in the module, and the box on your learning home disappears. Switch Content language back to the original language to use them. See Your progress.
• Shared links. On a module someone shared with you as a link, the tutor appears only if the person who shared it turned it on. There it answers from the module only: no web research, other courses or help pages.
