Taking a module

This page shows how to move around a module, change how it plays, and come back to it later.

Vidext — Module

A module plays by itself: when the voice finishes a scene, the next scene starts. It only stops in two places: at a check, until you answer it, and after an activity, until you move on yourself.

The course introCopy Anchor Link

Some courses open with a short spoken intro before their first module. It plays the first time you start the course.

• Skip intro, or the Escape key, goes straight to the module.
• Start module 1 starts the first module right away.
• To hear it again later, use Play course intro in the course's panel on your learning home.

Where the controls areCopy Anchor Link

On a computer, the controls sit in a narrow rail on the left of the player. From top to bottom:

1. The logo: takes you back to where you came from.
2. Navigation: opens and closes the side panel.
3. Play / pause.
4. The chapter steps: a bar for each chapter, followed by a bar for each check in it. The bar for where you are is longer.
5. Playback settings: speed and subtitles.
6. The tutor button, at the very bottom.

On a phone, the logo sits at the top left. Play, Navigation, Playback settings and the chapter steps form a row at the bottom of the screen.

At the top of the player you see the module's title, numbered by its place in the course, and the current chapter.

Use the play button in the rail, or press Space.

Moving aroundCopy Anchor Link

• Scroll, or swipe up and down on a touch screen, to go to the next or previous scene.
• Press the left and right arrow keys to go back or forward one scene. If a scene has its own control that responds to the arrow keys, such as a slider, the arrows move that control instead.
• Select a chapter step in the rail to jump to that chapter or check. A chapter's bar fills as the voice moves through it. A check's bar turns green once you've answered it.
• On a computer, hover over the chapter steps to see the list of chapters and pick one. On a phone, the list is at the top of the Navigation panel.

A chapter that comes after a check you haven't answered shows a lock. You can still pick it, but you'll land on that check first. See Checks.

Speed and subtitlesCopy Anchor Link

Playback settings holds:

• Playback speed: 0.5x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x or 2x. With the keyboard, Cmd/Ctrl + right arrow speeds up and Cmd/Ctrl + left arrow slows down, in steps of 0.25 between 0.5x and 3x. Going past 3x wraps to 0.5x, and below 0.5x wraps to 3x. Speeds such as 0.75x or 3x are only reachable with the keyboard.
• Subtitles: on by default. They show the narration a short phrase at a time. Press C to turn them on or off.

Both are remembered in that browser for the next module you open.

The side panelCopy Anchor Link

Navigation (or Cmd/Ctrl + B) opens the side panel. On a computer it also opens by itself for a few seconds when a module starts.

• Deep learning shows the narration of the scene you're on, as text. The current line is highlighted, and a check mark appears once the scene is complete. Video and activity scenes show (media content) instead. It shows one scene at a time; clicking the text does not move playback.
• The tutor sits below it. Select a word or a passage in Deep learning to ask the tutor about exactly that text. See Asking questions.

On a phone, the panel has two tabs: Transcript (the same text) and Chat (the tutor).

Inside a sceneCopy Anchor Link

• Cards and steps. On a screen that shows a list of cards or steps, click or tap a card to hear it. The voice jumps to where that card is explained and plays from there. Some of these screens also let you swipe or drag the cards.
• Videos. A video scene has its own controls: play and pause, a timeline, mute, and fullscreen.
• Activities. An activity is something you do on screen. While it loads you see Loading the activity. If it shows This activity could not start., press Try again. When you've finished an activity, the module does not move on by itself: pick the next step in the rail, or scroll to the next scene.

When a module endsCopy Anchor Link

The last scene recaps the module and shows how much of your course you've completed, this module included. Outside a course, it shows how much of the module you've completed. It also opens the side panel, so you can ask the tutor one more question. Use the logo to go back.

Leaving and coming backCopy Anchor Link

Leaving in the middle loses nothing. Your place is kept: the scene and how far into its narration you were. Resume learning on your learning home, or in the course's panel, brings you back to it. See Your progress.

Two notices can appear at the top of a module:

• This module has been updated. You're starting the latest version from the beginning. Your organization changed the module before you finished it, so you start the new version from the beginning.
• You've completed this module. You can review this version at any time. You've finished it; you can play it again as often as you like.

If a module won't openCopy Anchor Link

This module isn't available means Vidext couldn't open the module. Your organization may have taken it down or removed it. Go back to your learning home. If you think it's a mistake, contact the person who assigned or shared the module with you.
